About Wire & Watts

Wire & Watts is a small, independent site run by Biel Vazquez. Independent developer in Tarragona, Spain, who builds websites, SaaS products and online shops.

Biel Vazquez, founder and editor

I’m Biel Vazquez, an independent developer in Tarragona, Spain. I build websites, SaaS products and online shops, and I also run PayoutCost, a calculator for what you actually keep when you get paid from abroad.

I started Wire & Watts because the sizing questions people ask before a storm (what generator, what wire, how long will this battery last) have exact answers, and most pages online give a vague one. Every calculator here shows its formula and the code table it uses, so you can check the work.

What this site is

Ten calculators for questions that have exact answers: how big a generator must be, how long a battery lasts, what gauge a circuit needs. The formulas, the code tables and the assumptions are printed on every page, and the same code that draws the page runs the calculator, so the text and the tool can't disagree. When we're estimating rather than calculating — fuel use, for example — the page says so and gives the margin.

What it is not

It is not a substitute for a licensed electrician, an inspector or your equipment's installation manual. The NEC is adopted and amended locally, and the person who signs off on your installation is your authority having jurisdiction. Read the safety notice.

How we check the math

Every calculator has automated tests built from worked answers anyone can verify against the code tables: 12 AWG on a 20 A breaker, 6 AWG NM-B for 50 A, 60 A breaker for a 48 A EV charger, 6.18 V drop for 16 A over 100 ft of 12 AWG. If a change breaks one, it doesn't ship. Details on the methodology page.

How the site makes money

The site may show ads and, where a product genuinely fits a result, affiliate links that pay us a commission at no cost to you. Neither ever changes a calculation. Ads never appear inside a calculator.
