How many amps is 2,000 watts?

Updated by Biel Vazquez

Short answer: 2,000 watts draws 16.67 amps at 120 volts and 8.33 amps at 240 volts (amps = watts ÷ volts). From a 12 V battery through an inverter it is about 196 amps. At 120 V it is more than a 20 A circuit can carry continuously, so it belongs on 240 V.

2,000 watts to amps at every common voltage

Power factor 1 (heaters, kettles, resistive loads). For motors and electronics with a power factor of 0.9, add about 11%.
VoltageWhere you find itAmps
120 VUS household outlet16.7 A
208 VThree-phase building supply9.62 A
240 VUS large-appliance circuit8.33 A
12 VCar or RV battery166.7 A
24 V24 V battery bank83.3 A
48 V48 V battery bank41.7 A
amps = watts ÷ volts
2,000 W ÷ 120 V = 16.67 A
2,000 W ÷ 240 V = 8.33 A

Can a 2,000 W load go on a 15 or 20 amp circuit?

A breaker can carry its full rating, but NEC 210.20(A) limits a continuous load (three hours or more, like a heater left on overnight) to 80% of it.

CircuitFull rating (W)Can it run 2,000 W?
15 A, 120 V1,800No
20 A, 120 V2,400Yes, but not for 3 h+
15 A, 240 V3,600Yes, even continuous
20 A, 240 V4,800Yes, even continuous
30 A, 240 V7,200Yes, even continuous

Remember that everything else on the same circuit counts. A 2,000 W heater on a bedroom circuit that also feeds a TV and a computer can trip the breaker even when the heater alone would fit.

What uses about 2,000 watts

  • The surge rating of a "2,000 W" inverter generator, which runs about 1,600–1,800 W continuously
  • A 120 V, 20 A circuit at 83% of its rating
  • 240 V baseboard heaters (2,000 W units are common)

Running 2,000 W on backup power

From a portable power station's AC outlets, counting 15% inverter loss, if the inverter is rated for at least 2,000 W:

Power stationRuntime at 2,000 W
1,024 Wh26 min
2,048 Wh52 min
3,600 Wh1.5 h

On a generator, a resistive 2,000 W load needs about 2,500 running watts to keep the 20% margin; a motor load of the same running watts needs room for its starting surge too. Check your whole list in the generator size calculator.

What 2,000 watts costs to run

At the US average residential price of 18.19¢/kWh (EIA, January–July 2026), 2,000 W costs $0.36 per hour, or about $32.74 a month at three hours a day. State averages run from 12.36¢ to 46.28¢; use the appliance cost calculator with your state.
